Finding Your Purpose

This is about finding your purpose–by not looking for it. Read on… We only struggle with the meaning of our life and the point of it all if we’re not in peace. “Why am I here?” “What is my purpose?” “What am I meant to do with my life?” In peace, our life unfolds, one certain step after the next. We navigate life the way a stream flows over rocks and past boulders. A stream doesn’t ask itself “What is my purpose?” “Why am I here?” A stream would simply answer: “I am.”

So Hum: Sanskrit for “I am that.”

The yogic mantra “so hum” is not only a reflection of the sound of the breath but also carries a contemplative meaning: “I am that” (so = “I am” and hum = “that”). Here, “that” refers to all of creation, the one breathing us all.
What if you can do anything at all in the world?

What if your purpose is not to do something, but to be?

Just be. What if it’s not what we do, but how we do it?

You–in all your glory.

All your magnificence. Steadily growing, or retracting. Opening or shuttering. Loud or quiet. What if your purpose is to stop searching for direction and just feel the wind on your face?

What if enlightenment could happen

in the instant you realize you can stop seeking for answers outside yourself, and just contemplate the question? So hum. I am that.

Imagine life without searching.

When you’re driving and certain you know the way, you just take one turn after the next until you arrive. Exactly where you’re meant to be. It’s not the way that gets you there–it’s your certainty that you know it. Your peace. A long one. A short one. A scenic one. What gets you to your destination isn’t the route; it’s your decision to go there. And the certainty that you will find the way.

Always asking

for something finite or definitive in terms of direction–“What is my purpose?”–is like stopping the car at every light to ask a stranger to tell you where to turn next. We end up in circles, never getting anywhere. “I don’t know what I’m meant to do in this world,” we sigh. That’s because we’re not meant to ‘do’, we’re meant to ‘be’.

TODAY

Be. You. In all your glory. All your magnificence. Steadily growing, or retracting. Opening or shuttering. Loud or quiet. xL Tweet: It’s not the way that gets you there–it’s your certainty that you know it. @lindsey_lewis http://ctt.ec/TQBF6+ #powerofpeace
