Q+A: How do I Achieve This?

If reading’s more your jam, the written version is here

Another version of this is: “I want to do xx, but I don’t know how.” Xx can be figure out how to become a speaker, how to write a book, get more clients, get more high-paying clients, shift from my job to my dream career… Today I’m going to talk about the one big shift that has a profound impact and in my experience is the best answer to this question.

What’s Really Going on When We Ask This

Let’s really listen to what’s being conveyed in this question. The main point is the “I don’t know how” Sometimes it’s stated exactly like that. Other times, it’s just implied. It’s implied in the question: “How do I…?” Success Coach Steve Chandler talks about how the “I don’t know how” response comes from a part of us that is childlike. We all have this part, and there’s no wrong in having it. It’s just that when it comes to creating what we truly want, listening only to this part doesn’t serve us.

The Big Shift

We want to listen to the adult part of our brain, the part of us that knows how capable, creative and resourceful we are. In the words of coach Michelle Bauman, the “Grown ass woman” or man, inside us. I can tell you story after story of what’s happened for people when they began to opt into this way of being. Including my own. I’ll share one with you here, from a former client I’ll call Michael, a teacher who went from feeling sad, stuck and extremely frustrated to living out his dream of making music—and being paid for it: “I can firmly say that I have never enjoyed myself or had as much fun as I have in the last six months of my life. I am doing what I love on a daily basis. It’s hard to believe that not too long ago, I didn’t think I could do this. This fundamental shift in my perspective has totally opened up a world of possibilities to me. I now wake up each and every day with a sense of optimism and happiness knowing that I have found myself. Once upon a time I never thought it was possible, but now I know that it is, and I’m living it every day.” There are some really solid systems that can be utilized to help us create whatever it is we want—and I could talk about them here. But I’m not going to. Because today I want to focus on what serves all of us even more profoundly.

Ask Yourself This Question

It’s this: “If you knew I was going to give you a million dollars if you could figure out how, would you be able to do it?” I challenge people with this question. I do it when I have the answer to their ‘how’ question, when I know many or one great route they could take. I don’t go there first. First I go to this challenge. And everybody in response to that question says: “Yes.” Then I ask them, “Ok, how would you do it?” And they begin to come up with a plan of action that suits them best—one that makes use of their natural talents and skill-sets, and will actually be enjoyable for them. If each one of you wanted to feel better during the day and in your life, each one of you would come up with a different plan—given the opportunity to do it. And each of one you would come up with the way that will work best for you. If you choose in to opting out of “I don’t know” and into being a grown ass woman or man. Good luck and much love, Lindsey
